Read what kwaran workers told President Buhari

The organized labour union in kwara state today joined their counterparts across Nigeria to stage a peaceful protest to press home the approval and payment of the new minimum wage of N30,000 for the workers.

They told President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently finish up the signing of the new minimum wage bill into law and direct the federal law makers to follow suit.

The train of the protest which took off at the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) House, Ilorin, featured a large number of workers drawn from NLC, TUC, NUT, NURTW, Market men and women, including the governorship candidate on the platform of labour party in the state, Comrade Issa Aremu among several others.

Speaking at the labour house shortly before the protest, the National Deputy President of NLC, Comrade Najim Yasin said the protest was the end result of several meetings held on new minimum wage with the government which yielded no positive outcome.

Yasin who spoke through the state auditor of the NLC, Alhaji Issa Ore, sounded a note of warning that Nigerian workers will shut down the country through a nation wide industrial strike action, should government fail to sign the minimum wage bill after this warning protest.

Also speaking, the labour party governorship candidate in the state, Comrade Issa Aremu mni called on president muhammadu Buhari to finish the job he has started on new minimum wage by forwarding the executive bill on new minimum wage to the National Assembly for onward Lñapproval.

Aremu said the best way for the federal government to immortalise late President Shehu Shagari in the hearts of Nigerian workers is to approve the payment of the new minimum wage, saying that President Shagari was the first President to sign the minimum wage in 1981 during a labour strike that did not last more than a day under the then NLC President, Mr Sumonu.

Addressing members in front of government house, the state NLC Chairman, Comrade Yekini Agunbiade, called on Federal Government to as a matter of urgency sing the the new minimum wage in to law.

Agunbiade who lamented the high rate of poverty in the country occasioned by low wages, said workers would not hesitate to embark on an indefinite strike action if government continues to play them around like toys.
