The Supreme Court of Nigeria has upheld the electoral victory of Governor Babajide Sanwolu and his deputy Obafemi Hamsat as duly elected as governor and deputy governor of the state in the 2023 last gubernatorial election in the state.
The candidate of labour party Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour had approached the tribunal to contest the election citing that Sanwoolu’s running mate was not qualified.
He accused Obafemi Hamsat of renouncing his citizenship as Nigerian.
While delivering his judgement, the court ruled that renouncing of citizenship of a citizen by birth must be registered by the Nigerian president, adding that the appellant did not provide an evidence to that effect.
The court however held that Obafemi Hamsat is a Nigerian by birth.
The other appellant, Abdulazeez Adeniran, popularly known as Jandor of the PDP had contended that Sawo-Olu’s name in his WAEC certificate was different from the one he submitted to INEC.
The Supreme Court dismissed the appeal and described it as “academic”
