An appeal has gone to the people of Kwara State to be advocates of a clean and hygienic environment to make the state save of endemic diseases, as kwarans join people across the globe to mark this year edition of Global Recycling Day (GRD).
The Team Leader of Pick-That-Trash in Kwara State, a non-governmental organization committed to educating Nigerians on how to generate, dispose and manage waste, Baliqees Salaudeen, made the appeal on Wednesday (March 18, 2020) while speaking on the Global Recycling Day 2020 on Unilorin FM 89.3.
Salaudeen explained that the theme of this year’s celebration is “Recycling-Heroes” which is aimed to encourage people to borrow a leaf from the activities of the individual, group, governmental and non-governmental organisations who are contributing to an environmentally stable planet and a greener future for all.
Salaudeen, who doubles as the Founder and Executive Director at Bays Planet Foundation, a registered not-for-profit non-governmental organization centered on rehabilitating and creating safe spaces for victims of rape and domestic violence, however, lamented the attitude of people towards safe and hygiene environment.
According to her, statistically, there are billions of used plastics and dirty particles being moved into the sea yearly which the fishes and other animals feed on. She observed that whatever we are doing as humans, is affecting the animals and the fishes in the see which come back to our tables as food.
While discouraging the dropping of used nylon, plastic, cloths, cans and other particles that can be recycled into gutters and drainages, Salaudeen appealed to the people of Kwara state to compiled them give to recyclers who would give them something in return.
She warned that dropping all these into the gutters could strengthen flooding, saying the consequence could be damning
