Al-Hikmah University’s Center for Peace and Security Studies commemorated International Peace Day with a press briefing and sensitization program, urging the Federal Government and world leaders to prioritize peace advocacy.
The Director, Center for Peace and Security Studies, Al-Hikmah University, Adewole Ilorin Kwara State, Dr AbdulAzeez Adekola, in his address, emphasized the need for good governance to realize peace.
Dr Adekola made this known at the “2024 International Peace Day Press Briefing and Sensitization programme” organised by the Center for Peace and Security Studies of Al-Hikmah University held on Monday (September 23, 2024) at the school auditorium.
Dr. Adekola called on Nigerians to adopt dialogue, negotiation, and non-violent means to resolve issues, ensuring peace and harmony in the country.
He reminded the government of its responsibility to provide essential needs like infrastructure, food, and security, critical components of good governance.
“The government should prioritize good governance where peace can be realized,” Dr. Adekola stated.
He also encouraged Nigerians to promote peace, emphasizing the importance of achieving sustainable development goals and fostering global peace.
The Center for Peace and Security Studies has been at the forefront of promoting peace and security in Nigeria and globally since its inception in 2020. Discussions are underway with the Nigeria Police Force to enhance peace in the country.
In his opening remarks, the the Vice Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, Prof. Noah Yusuf stressed the importance of Nigerians being agents of peace, saying that peace fosters progress, prosperity, and sustenance.
“If we follow the Biblical injunction of eye for an eye, the whole country will go blind. Dialogue is also key to the attainment of peaceful co-existence in the country,” he said.
Prof. Yusuf expressed concern over Nigeria’s security state, noting the substantial funds allocated to security. He attributed Nigeria’s problems to the level of peace and security, emphasizing that addressing insecurity would lead to growth and development.
