In further fulfilment of its core mandate as University for Community Development and Entrepreneurship, the management of the Kwara State University (KWASU) has established centre for Complementary and Alternative Therapy (CAT).
Inaugurating the Board of the CAT in his office on Tuesday (October 12, 2021), the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Muhammed Mustapaha Akanbi SAN, said the rationale behind the setting up of the centre in KWASU is to “promote Complementary and Alternative Therapies for the wellbeing of the KWASU community as well as the general public”.
Professor Akanbi explained that the CAT will be saddled with responsibility of providing Complementary and Alternative Therapies such as Acupuncture, Acupressure, Cupping (Hijamah), Herbal medicine, Nutritional Medicine, Exercise Therapy, Colour Therapy, PsychoTherapy, Aromatherapy, Massage Therapy,Traditional Bone Setting, Natural Diagnoses among others.
Other function of the CAT according the Vice Chancellor is training of KWASU students and other interested members of the community and the public on Complementary and Alternative Therapies.
He added that CAT’s mandate will also capture Research and Collaborations on Complementary and Alternative Therapies with similar centres in other Universities, such as the African Centre for Herbal Research domiciled in the University of Ilorin, established by the US consortium of a number of African Universities.
Professor Akanbi disclosed further that KWASU students, members of the immediate environment, and the general public will benefit immensely from this value addition to the system, as a University established for community development.
The Vice Chancellor explained further that the centre as a formidable alternative and integration to Orthodox health-care,
is going to be rich in Traditional Therapies of ancestral origins with minimal or zero side effects.
He urged all members of the board to bring to bear their vast experiences in order to justify the confidence reposed in them by the authority of the University and more importantly to achieve the purpose for which the CAT was established.
The Board Members of CAT are, the Chief Medical Director of the KWASU clinic Dr Nimat Idris; Dean Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, Prof.Emmanuel Ajani; Director of Centre for Continuous Education, Prof.Mubaraq Sanni; Dr Henry Sawyerr; Director Centre for Entrepreneurship, Dr Sunday Ojo; Director Centre for Wellness and Alternative Therapy, Dr Khadijah Musah; and Dr (Mrs) Hauwa Kamaldeen Abdulkareem.
