The Vice Chancellor of the Kwara State University (KWASU), Professor Shaykh Luqman Jimoh has commissioned KWASU Senior Citizens Centre (KSCC), a center that is dedicated to the care and healthy ageing of senior citizens.
The KSCC was commissioned on Friday March 7th 2025 at the Kwara State University Teaching Hospital Surulere area, Ilorin.
The KWASU Senior Citizens Centre (KSCC) is a unique facility that provides proactive health care services to older persons with the goal of improving their quality of life.
Professor Jimoh, who spoke through the Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Professor Mashood Jimba at the occasion, stated that the Centre would not only provide service to the older members of the community but also train world-class professionals in caregiving.
He noted that the training facilities at the Centre will ensure that the much needed human resource in the field of geriatric care is given adequate and professional training while ensuring that senior citizens have access to physical therapies that will stimulate and improve their quality of life.
The Chairman of the Board of the Centre, Professor Emmanuel Ajani, thanked the management of the university for giving the needed support to kickstart activities at the centre.
He said just three months into the Centre, activities are already in top gear. This, he said, is a clear indication that the KSCC will be a massive success.
The director of the KWASU Senior Citizens Centre, Dr. Nimat Idris, in her opening remarks, noted that counselling and therapies such as lifestyle modification will be used primarily in the care of senior citizens.
She emphasised that the KSCC currently runs a basic certificate in caregiving with over 250 students certified by the centre.
Dr. Idris added that plans are in place to commence a professional diploma in caregiving where holders of the diploma would be inducted as Fellows of Community of Caregivers (FCOC).
