The federation of Muslim Women Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) has frown at the sanction placed on Niger Republic as a result of Military coup in the country.
This was made known in a press release jointly signed by the National Amira and the Public Relations Officer of the association; Mrs Sanni Rafiah Idowu and Hon Maimuna Momodu respectively.
According to the statement, ECOWAS must realise that border closure and electricity cuts will only have adverse effect on the economy of the nation and deepen poverty among citizens of the country.
Maimuna said the military intervention by ECOWAS will only worsen the economy of Niger Republic and other neighboring countries including Nigeria.
“sanction will only affect the economies of the neighboring countries ( Burkina Faso, Mali, Chad, Benin Republic and Nigeria)”
“The seven Northern states in Nigeria that share borders with Niger Republic (Jigawa, Kano, Kebbi, Zamfara, Sokoto, Yobe, and Borno) are already being ravaged by insecurity adding that any other military intervention in Niger at this time will worsen the situation”
FOMWAN therefore called for the removal of the sanction placed on Niger Republic and called for peaceful dialogue to solve the problem.
According to the association, more than 11.2million people are already displaced in the country and that women and children will bear the brunt of further military intervention in the country.
FOMWAN noted further that more Military struggle in Niger will be a setback for the development of the country.
It enjoined ECOWAS countries to make democracy attractive through good governance in their respective state and arrest the trend of recurrence military coup in West Africa.
FOMWAN however suggested a diplomatic approach to solving the problem by working with internal stakeholders in Niger Republic to return the country back to democratic government.
