The modern day predicament of societal ills is due to our arrant violation of the divine law of Allah SWT (Shari’ah). Dr Nuraen Taiwo Hassan Dindi, HOD, Dept of Public and International Law, Baze University Abuja has said.
He submitted that the only solution to effect a positive change in the present day Nigeria is attitudinal change and total submission to the will of Allah as it is categorically stated in the glorious Qur’an.
Speaking at the Ramadan Lecture of the Muslim Lawyers Association of Nigeria(MULAN), Kwara State Chapter held in Ilorin Dindi described Nigeria as the Giant of Africa which must lead by example in all ramifications.
Dindi, who is the Head of the Department, Public and International Law, University of Abuja said “Nigerian economy is the largest on the continent and the GDP continues to grow. However, those goods and natural resources are not spread evenly among the populace. Nigeria is essentially a rich country with poor people. In fact, the richest man in Africa comes from Nigeria.
“The problem is that the majority of the population of the country is engaged in agriculture. This sector is where the poverty rules”.
The University lecturer, who doubles as the National Assistant Chief Imam of the Nawar-Ud-Deen Islamic Society of Nigeria, also said Boko Haram has made Nigeria famous throughout the world for terrorism, adding that this Islamic organization fights against the western ways of life, education, medicine amongst other things.
Among the top social scourges of Nigeria is poverty. It becomes the cause of many other social problems in the society when left unattended to as it is the case in Nigeria today.
According to him, “currently the unemployment rate in Nigeria is 75%. In part, it is caused by the displaced persons, who were forced to leave their homes and flee. This creates social and psychological issues and evokes enmity among different tribes in the country. Graduates of all degrees in different disciplines are abound in the labour market seeking for jobs that are not commensurate with their qualifications. People leave their homes and go to overpopulated cities, such as Abuja, Abeokuta, Lagos Kano, Enugu, Portharcourt and the like looking to make their living and get a better life”.
He admonished parents to instill discipline, in their children, teach them religious beliefs that will serve as their stronghold. In his words “Poor parenting starts from parents ignoring the proper etiquettes that befits a child and the child will become a vice to the society and nation at large”.
The guest speaker who gave Islamic perspective on how children should be raised, mentioned the Shariah Law as very important to the upbringing of an Islamic child.
“When the child is well versed with the Holy Quran, Hadith and other Islamic knowledge, he knows what is right and what is wrong and will definitely follow the path laid down by the parents”
He also mentioned that parents should maintain principle of equality and righteousness among their children. He said “children should not feel isolated or unfavoured by parents, instead they should be given proper treatment that will encourage their growth as disciplined individuals”.
In his remark, Barrister Ganiyu Bello, the Chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Ilorin branch, commended the organization for organising the lecture which he described as a good development.
Bello implored Muslim Lawyers to be committed to the association’s activities, by contributing and donating to the welfare of the administration.
Also, the Chairman of MULAN Kwara State, Dr Hussein Ahmad Folorunsho thanked everyone for attending the programme .
Alh Adebayo Oba Adelodun, SAN was the Chairman of the event, while the Special Guests were Hon Justice S Kawu, Chief judge, Kwara State and Hon Justice Abdullateef Kamaldeen, Ag. Grand Kadi of Kwara State.
Other notable figures in attendance were Hon Justice Mahmud Abdulgafar, Hon Justice S M Akanbi, Hon Justice A L Is’haq, Hon Justice S B Olanipekun and Hon Kadi Sharafu Olawale Hanafi .
