No human is above mistake and forgetfulness, Prophets of Allah (peace be upon them) inclusive, that is why scriptures were revealed to the Prophets as a direction in order to set the pace for the World. Notwithstanding, Prophets are bound to make mistakes and Allah (swt) redirects them immediately which in turn serve as sources of rules and regulations to mankind. Similarly, they also await permission before taking actions because they are also human beings. I refer you to Q53:3-4.
By and large, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), the best of mankind, displayed high level of morality and took heed in taking revenge. I refer you to Q16:126.
“And if you punish your enemy then punish them with the like of that with which you were afflicted. But if you endure patiently, verily, it is better for the patient”
The genesis of the above verse was during the battle of Hudd which claimed the life of one of the fore-companions of the Prophet and the great warrior in history, Seyyidna Hamzat(may Allah be pleased with him). Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was furious and vowed to kill 70 unbelievers in revenge of a single soul(Seyyidna Hamzat). As a result, the above cited verse was revealed to checkmate the decision of the Prophet in taking revenge, adding that, 70 souls for a single one were excessive, the Prophet should punish his enemy with the number of soul claimed or pardon the culprit. The Prophet (PBUH) in his usual kindness and act of humanity therefore, pardoned his enemy and with immediate effect annulled the revenge.
In conclusion, government at all levels, political office holders at the helm of affairs and individuals are therefore implored to imitate the exemplary leadership of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and exhibit large heartedness, be magnanimous in taking decisions rather than being revengeful at all cause, precisely, those in position of power today should pardon their enemies and have regard for human beings. Tomorrow is pregnant and no one knows what it will deliver.
