A Magistrate court sitting in Ilorin has arraigned one Isaac Jolugba, 30, of Egbe, Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State for allegedly vandalizing a transformer’s cable belonging to Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC),
The accused was arraigned on one-count charge of theft, which contradicted Section 287 of the Penal Code Law.
The accused was arrested on August 2, sequel to a case of vandalization of transformer cable reported to the Intelligence and Investigations Department of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) Kwara state Command Headquarters, Ilorin.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), people of Irewolede, Akerebiata community, Ilorin arrested the accused after he allegedly vandalized the transformer cable belonging to IBEDC at the community and handed him over to the NSCDC, Kwara State Command.
The FIR stated that investigations and confessional statement of the accused revealed that he intended to travel to Kanji in Niger state where he will sell the stolen cable.
The prosecutor, Barrister Bode Silas of the legal department, NSCDC Ilorin prayed the court to adjourn the case till further date to enable him prove the case against the accused.
The prosecutor whoever left the bail of the accused to the discretion of the court.
The defense counsel, Barrister G.O. Osagbemi appealed to the court to grants bail to the accused to bail pending the determination of the case.
He further submitted that Section 36(5) of 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria still presumed the accused innocent of the allegation until proved otherwise.
The presiding judge, Mr. J.B. Salihu acceded to the submission of the defense, as he granted bail to the accused at the sum of N200,000 and two sureties in like sum.
The court adjourned the case till September 24 for hearing.
