Kwara State University (KWASU) is among the four universities that will be representing Nigeria at the Commonwealth Global Debate Championship 2022.
The continental debate competition will be holding in Kigali, Rwanda in June this year.
KWASU represented by Olaoluwa Oluwaseun Oduola of the Medical Laboratory Science Department, emerged second with 78 points in the competition organised by the Commonwealth Society of Nigeria in Abuja, to qualify for the second phase of the contest.
The competition is part of activities to commemorate the Commonwealth United Nations Day 2022 with the theme: Delivering a common future”.
In the keenly contested debate competition, Ebonyi State University came first with 85 points while University of Abuja clinched third position with 66 points.
Abia State University will also be representing the country at the global competition having won the debate competition in the previous year.
The participants were judged based on a five-minute presentations on the topic for the competition: A United Nigeria: Restoring peace and Unity to the country”.
According to the organizers, in Rwanda the best three countries with their five national teams will represent the continent in the United Kingdom by September, 2022.
Prizes for the global level include Master’s/PhD scholarship, cash awards, automatic employment among others.
The competition, the organizers stressed is geared towards improving academic research, students’ intellectual capabilities and communication skills as well as instilling in them the confidence to speak intelligently, while helping to solve the most pressing challenges of the world.
