A Professor of Urology and a former Chief Medical Director of The University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Prof. Suleiman Alege Kuranga has hailed the efforts of the Vice Chancellor and the management team of Kwara State University in actualising the vision of establishing a College of Medical Sciences in the institution.
Prof. Kuranga made this commendation at the inauguration of the Implementation Committee on the Establishment of KWASU College of Health sciences, on Tuesday, the 1st of September 2020.
Prof Kuranga, who is chairman of the implementation committee noted that the initiative is happening at a critical period when the country is facing a potential shortage of medical doctors and allied personnel.
He said ” there is no doubt that KWASU College of Health Sciences will have an unquantifiable impact on the health sector of Kwara state in particular and the country as a whole.
While stressing that it is pertinent that an institution such as KWASU has a Medical Science training facility, Prof. Kuranga stated that Kwara state is well positioned with capable manpower to staff the college.
Earlier in his welcome speech the Vice Chancellor of KWASU, Prof. Muhammed Mustapha Akanbi SAN reiterated the importance of having a medical college in the institution where “prospective healthcare workers can access quality world class training”.
The Vice Chancellor pointed out that the committee members were selected with the highest recommendations devoid of any political
undertones.
Prof Akanbi, while charging them to come up with a “workable blueprint” which must include funding modalities said ” I believe you are scholars and administrators who can proffer solutions to issues that may seem insurmountable”.
The university helmsman also urged the members to shun political and mundane sentiments in their deliberations. Stressing that they should see the task as a sacrifice to not only the state but to humanity in general.
“I urge you to give your very best to the task ahead and to see it as a selfless service to humanity and to God”, he said.
The Implementation Committee on the Establishment of KWASU College of Health Services has Prof. Suleiman Alege Kuranga as the Chairman. Other members include: Prof. B.S Alabi; Prof. Muniru Ijaiya; Prof. Abdulfatai Olokoba; Prof. Aishat Gobir; Prof. Baba Awoye Issa and Prof. M.S Ajao.
Also on the committee are: Dr. Ahmed Abdulkadir ( the Chief Medical Director of General Hospital; Dr. Mrs Hadijat O. Raji; Dr. Neemat Idris, Director KWASU Health Services; Dr. Khadija Toyin Musa; Dr. Idayat Durotoye; Prof. Philip Manma Kolo; Dr. Mohammed Baba Abdulkadir and Dr. Umar Jubril.
