…. warns traders against indiscriminate dumping of refuse
The Kwara State Ministry of Environment has explained the reasons for the temporary sealing of the trading areas within the GRA popularly referred to as the ‘Yoruba Road Market’ on Thursday.
Explaining on behalf of the Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Abubakar Ayinla stated that the traders acted contrary to the environmental laws that were made known to them more than six months ago.
The Commissioner noted that the traders were sabotaging government’s efforts at eradicating indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the road medians.
The government position was made known to officials and representatives of the Market Traders Association led by Hajia Muibat AbdulRaheem-Olumo, the Iya-Loja General, at the premises of the State Ministry of Environment.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Press Secretary of the Ministry of Environment on Thursday (January 23, 2025), Shakirat Muritala and made available to newsmen.
The traders who were remorseful after the details were revealed to them used the opportunity to pledge their support for the Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s led administration and apologized on behalf of the traders who harassed and booed environmental health officers in the course of duty. The traders also used the forum to educate their members to comply with sanitary laws.
The traders were later requested to sign relevant undertakings as a pre-requisite to re-opening the sealed trade areas and always ensure that the market is clean with refuse collected accordingly by the designated commercial waste consultants for onward disposal at the Government dump site.
In attendance at the meeting were the Vice Chairman of the Market Association, Alhaji Kabir Abdulsalam, the Babaloja of Yoruba Road, Alh Babatunde Muideen and Iya Loja of Yoruba Road, Alhaja Ajide Mulikat and other officials of the traders Association, as well as Directors and officials of the State Ministry of Environment.
