An emergency meeting was held on August 17, 2024, in Malete, presided over by Magaji Malete, Mallam Abdul Rahman Babatunde Oreoluwa, to address the rising complaints regarding the hike in prices of accommodation in private hostels.
The meeting was attended by stakeholders, including landlords, caretaker agents, student union government representatives, community representatives, and the Dean of Students’ Affairs.
After extensive deliberations, the meeting resolved to suspend all session-based tenancy agreements with students and replace them with one-year calendar tenancy agreements.
This move aims to prevent student evictions from their accommodations within the specified period.
A committee comprising representatives from each stakeholder group was formed to assess all houses in Malete and ensure proper coordination and adherence to community standards.
The committee will also recommend fair pricing for prospective students and appropriate security measures to safeguard tenants’ lives and properties.
All landlords are required to register their properties with Magaji Malete, with a copy of the registration submitted to the Dean of Students’ Affairs.
Registration of landlords, caretakers, and agents will commence on Monday at 4:00 PM, with a registration fee set at ₦10,000 for landlords and ₦5,000 for caretakers and agents.
Only accredited caretakers and agents will be registered and allowed to operate in Malete, and all prospective student tenants must be issued a receipt of payment indicating a one-year duration.
Students are advised to report any landlord attempting to issue receipts without a one-year tenancy period to the Dean of Students’ Affairs.
The committee’s terms of reference include visiting all commercial houses in Malete to inspect facilities and recommend fair pricing and security measures.
The community has reiterated that ignorance of the law is not an excuse, and all stakeholders are advised to adhere strictly to these community resolutions to avoid severe sanctions.
