Religious Leaders in Kwara State have been called upon to continue to preach against the menace of Gender Based Violence (GBV), with the aim of putting a stop to all manners of violence in the society.
The Director of Women, Ministry of Women Affairs, Hajia Modinat Idris made the call during the week at a one-day photo voice workshop, organized for stakeholders by Olive Community Development Initiative, at the Conference Room of the Ministry.
Hajia Idris called for further awareness and sensitization on Violence Against Person Prohibition (VAPP) Law for culprits to know the consequences of their actions.
According to her, “the essence of the photo voice workshop is to know the views of stakeholders, with the aim of finding a lasting solution to the menace”.
In her remarks, the Chairman, National Association of Women Journalists, (Kwara State Chapter), Ayobola Ipinlaye affirmed that mothers have a lot to do as far as female children are concerned, advising them to move closer to their children in order to be free to express themselves, given the prevailing cases of rape.
Delivering her paper, the facilitator of the photo workshop on Gender Based Violence, Miss Oluwatoni Adeleke explained that the objective of the workshop was to ascertain the number of survivors of gender based violence in our society, especially their experiences as far as security and justice are concerned.
A representative of the Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN), Hajia Lateefat Aromaradu charged women to help the situation by speaking out whenever their wards/children are molested, to allow the law take its course on the perpetrators.
She explained that the association on its own has set up a committee on GBV as a way of giving the victims a voice in the society.
Sharing her experience at the workshop, a victim and survivor of Gender Based Violence, who pleaded anonymity, called on Government to ensure a total eradication of the vices by letting the law take its course on criminals, and allow victims to get the desired justice.
