As the forthcoming Nigerian 2023 General Elections are less than two months, kwaran politicians have been cautioned to discard campaign of calumny but embrace peaceful conduct before, during and after the polls, so as to have peaceful, united and prosperous society after the exercise.
The National President of Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU), Alhaji Aliyu Otta Uthman, cautioned the political class on Sunday (December 25, 2022) during the 57th National Conference of the union held at the Palace of the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji (Dr) Ibrahim Sulu Gambari CFR.
Alhaji Uthman affirmed that IEDPU is apolitical but it is a friend to all political parties, saying thst this singular feat informed the union decision to constitute a Peace Committee chaired by a former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Salihu Modibbo Alfa Belgore, to engage all politicians in the state irrespective of party affiliations on the need to embrace and sustain peace and unity before, during and after the elections.
“It must be stated clearly IEDPU belongs to no politcal party as it is a friend to all political parties. The union by convention and conviction incontrovertibly apolitical. This fact made it to constitute a Peace Committee under the Chairmanship of a former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Salihu Modibbo Alfa Belgore, to engage all politicians of different persuasions on the need to sustain the peace, unity and harmony that have been the heritage of Ilorin from time immemorial. Elections must not divide but bring us together”
“The union calls for a campaign devoid of violence in any manner. Politcal parties and leaders should caution their members to embrace peace, work and walk it before, during and after the elections. Election is now, generation is next. The next generation ought to be the preoccupation of all the compatriots”, he said.
In his speech, the Chairman of the occasion who is also the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Interior, Dr Shuaib Belgore, commended IEDPU for always promoting socio-economic development, unity and peaceful coexistence among the people of the Ilorin Emirate.
The 57th National Conference of the union was graced by the important personalities including the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, the state Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Turaki of Ilorin, Mallam Saliu Mustapha, and notable members of the emirate too numerous to mention.
