The Commandant General of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Abdullahi Gana Mohammad has said the corps is determined to put an end to the rising cases of rape in the country.
The Civil Defence boss made this known on Thursday (July 16, 2020) while fielding questions from newsmen in Abuja.
He hinted that the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbeshola had directed the NSCDC’s Anti rape unit that was recently established few months ago by the corps.
He explained further that since the establishment of the anti-rape unit, his men had made several arrest in connection with various rape cases across the country.
The NSCDC boss who made reference to the case of a – three month old baby that was raped in Adogi village in Nassarawa State, saying that the culprit ran away to Akwanga, another town in Nassarawa State, but his men trailed him and eventually got him arrested.
He disclosed further that another case is being followed up by his men in Potiskum, Yobe state.
“We are working round the clock to bring rape cases to the barest minimum in Nigeria. We have also sent our men on Anti rape campaign” he said.
When asked about the relationship between the Civil Defence and other security agencies especially the Police, Mohammad stated that the relationship between Civil Defence and other security agencies had been very cordial.
“Let me start with the Army, we are the babies of the army and we are trained by them. We also work with different operations such operation Lafiya Dole, Operation Yaki among others.
“We have good relationship with the Nigerian Navy, whenever they arrest vessels, they hand them over to us. We enjoy good relationship with the Air Force as well”.
When arrest is made by our men, the suspects are handed over to Nigeria Police and will be paraded” he added.
The NSCDC boss admitted that the Inspector General of Police, Adamu Muhammed, has been very kind and considerate to the corps adding that the two institutions have good relationship and share intelligence report.
Speaking on the man power of the corps and it’s capacity to carry out it’s mandate, country number one Civil Defense officer explained
“Today, we have about 56,000 personnel and to be frank, the mandate of the corps is expanding on daily basis, we have deployed 3500 men to the North East, 2500 to provide security to schools in the North East.
We have about 5000 men in Agro Rangers Unit to provide security for farm lands. We have solid mineral units to curb illegal mining with about 3000 men, so our mandate is increasing; therefore, we need to increase our manpower” he added.
