The Vice Chancellor of Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, Professor Muhammed Mustapha Akanbi SAN, has said KWASU had begun moves to make the institution a big player in agro- allied businesses in Nigeria
Professor Akanbi announced that the institution would help Kwara state and Nigeria in general to become self sufficient in food production.
To achieve this, the KWASU boss said the university would ensure massive planting of grains, especially maize in its Baruten and Ekiti campuses in addition to the faculty of Agriculture’s demonstration farms in the main campus.
The VC posited that ” our universities must be big players in ensuring food sufficiency in the country. We have established KWASU Investments and Consultancy unit with the mandate to ensure that our institution becomes a big player in agro- allied businesses.
” We have land and the expertise. We shall be producing day-old chick. We want to plant en- masse maize in our Baruten and Ekiti campuses. We shall give out lands for people to farm while our agriculture faculty will offer the farmers technical assistance.”
Akanbi, who is the second vice chancellor of the 11th year old university,also pledged to improve on the existing collaborative effortshe met on ground with a view to make the university a world class.
” I met a lot of collaborative efforts. I already have a solid footings. I shall build on this. We will think global and act local in ensuring that KWASU becomes a first class institution, ” he assured.
The VC who disclosed that the university’s Law programme had been accredited by the National Universities Commission(NUC) said its only awaiting accreditation by the Legal Education Council.
He thanked Kwara state governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for approving N17m for the university for the purpose of accrediting its Law programme.
