Omupo citizens, under the auspices of its umbrella national body, Omupo Descendants Union (ODU), has rolled out a comprehensive relief package to complement government’s effort to cushion the effect of the lockdown arising from the covid-19 pandemic on its people.
The package, according to a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of State of ODU, Mustafa Abubakar, is designed as part of the palliatives to mitigate the effect of the lockdown on people in Omupo.
The food items (rice and gari) were procured by the Palliatives Committees with part of the money realized from the OMUPO COVID-19 RELIEF FUND, which was established with the approval of the Olomu of Omupo, HRH Oba Yakubu Adebayo Buari (Ilufemiloye II).
Disbursing the foodstuffs to the residents of the town at the palace of the Olomu of Omupo on Friday (April 17, 2020), the Chairman of the Omupo COVID-19 Palliative Committee, Alhaji Abdulkareem Ishola, said that the gesture is the first step in the categories of opportunities the ODU is putting together as palliatives to assist all residents in the town.
Alhaji Ishola, who was represented by the Chiarman of the Union in Omupo, Alhaji Hassan Issa Toyin, thanked the recipients for accepting the little they can provide, and urged them to stay home, stay safe, observe all health protective steps and most importantly pray for the town, the state and the nation.
He said, “This palliatives is made possible with the donations by benevolent indigenes of the town and their friends, who thought it necessary to assist their brothers and sisters who were obviously in need of support to curtail the challenges of the prevailing pandemicand the attendant lockdown of economic and social activities”.
While commenting, the National President of ODU, Dr. Monisoye Sola Afolabi , Alhaji Toyin disclosed that “following a suggestion, which was subsequently endorsed by HRH, the Olomu of Omupo Land, the OMUPO COVID-19 RELIEF FUND was inaugurated to provide palliatives for our people resident in Omupo. In pursuant to this, a Palliatives Committee was set up under the chairmanship of AlhajiAbdulKareem Ishola to develop the relevant framework for its implementation.
The Committee submitted its report indicating, among others, provision of some minimum palliatives for 455 people in Omupo”, for which money was promptly disbursed, while the items were procured and distributed even before the government’s palliatives arrived.
The Committee distributed 5kg of rice and 5kg of gari to each of the identified 455 people that qualify for the palliatives. It was like manna from heaven as most of the recipients expressed joy at the proactive step taken by the ODU in ameliorating the hardship caused by the lockdown.
