The Federation of Muslim Women Associations in Nigeria
(FOMWAN) has called on the Federal Government to institute a stiffer penalty for producers, smugglers, and peddlers of dangerous drugs and substances in the country.
The association also called on governments at all levels to empower women with skills in new technology that will reduce domestic labor and the hazard of environmental pollution.
These form parts of the communique issued at the end of the FOMWAN’S 2019 annual Conference held in September at Umar Musa Yar’Adua University, Katsina state.
The association described drug abuse as a social cancer that must not be allowed to grow further if the country cares about the future of this nation, stressing that dangerous drugs and substances are seriously
destroying the country’s youth and vibrant populations.
The association, according to the 8-point communique jointly signed by the FOMWAN National Amirah and National PRO, Hajiya Halimah Jibril and Dr Sumaye Fadimatu Hamza respectively, called on governments to protect girls by invoking the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act (VAPP), and other existing laws on rape and other related sexual harrashment by punishing offenders accordingly.
The communique also called on parents to break the culture of silence by reporting rapists to the appropriate authorities for prosecution and staying the course of justice.
The association equally enjoined Traditional rulers in the country to mobilize their communities to revive the tradition of annual
Tree Planting exercise to counter the effect of desert encroachment, just as it advised government at all levels to support the exercise by providing seedlings to the communities.
The association appreciated all Resource persons, Chairmen, Discussants and delegates that came from within and outside Nigeria especially delegate from Niger Republic among others dignatories that eminently graced the event.
The FOMWAN however expressed profound gratitude to the First Lady Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr
Aisha Muhammadu Buhari, the Katsina State Government ,the Speaker of the House of Representative,
the wife of the Katsina State Governor, the Northern Governors Wives Forum, His Eminence, the
Sultan of Sokoto, their Royal Highnesses, the Emirs of Katsina and Daura, the Vice Chancellor of Umar Musa Yar’adua University Katsina, and indeed the entire people of Katsina State for accorded them warm reception and great hospitality throughout the period of the conference.
