Comrade Aremu advises media on truth, accurate reports

NEC Member, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Issa Aremu mni has called on media practitioners in Nigeria to always report the truth and not fake news.

Aremu who is a Board Member, National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, also called on the media houses in Nigeria to emulate UNILORIN 89.3 FM in terms of responsible and constructive reportage of events.

The frontline labour leader in the country made the call on Tuesday in his address at the occasion of the 10th Anniversary of the UNILORIN 89.3 FM, held at the University of Ilorin main Auditorium.

Speaking through the Secretary of the Kwara State Labour Party, Comrade Rotimi Ajiboye on the occasion, Comrade Aremu particularly commended the founder of the UNILORIN 89.3 FM and former Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Is’haq Olanrewaju Oloyede for the great vision to establish the campus FM radio station 10 years ago.

Comerade Aremu who doubles as the Vice President, IndustriALL Global Union, said the success story of UNILORIN 89.3FM in the last ten years is the story of leadership in this great university.

“I salute the legacy of successful vice chancellors, namely “Professor Oloyede’s administration that gave birth to this radio, Professor Ambali’s administration that kept it glowing and alive and the Professor Abdulkareem’s administration that is currently nurturing it to achieve this enviable height” Aremu said.

Comrade Aremu was conferred with a prestigious merit award in recognition of his significant roles to the radio station and society in general.

He commended the management and staff of the radio for finding him worthy of a merit award bestowed on him and made a pledge that the recognition would further spur him to continue his service to God and humanity

“I wish to register my profound appreciation to the University for finding me worthy for an award of honour on this great occasion of 10th Anniversary of the UNILORIN 89.3 FM. However, I regret my inability to come for the award in person due to other commitments” he said.

He dedicated the award to the workers of UNILORIN 89.3 FM for being the pride of the University and the society in general through their objective reports and display of professionalism in the cause of discharging their official responsibilities.

Speaking about the remarkable achievements of UNILORIN 89.3FM in the last one decade, Comrade Aremu said the radio station is reputed to be first campus radio station in Kwara State.

He added that it pioneered the introduction of phone in during daily morning paper review tagged “Top Highlights” and “Tatiwere”, saying that this great effort explains the versatility of this radio to connect town with gown via community radio.

According to him, Over 1000 students, who are now graduates, have undergone practical training from the competent and most experienced staff of the station, adding that most of these students are currently making waves in various media houses across the country.

“Students of Mass communication Department, Education Technology and Performing Arts Departments of the University of Ilorin also pass through this radio station for their practical training to complement theoretical aspect of their course of studies.

“Some programmes are meticulously designed to support lecture room classes. A good example is “Know Your Grammar”. Lecturers from English Department are saddled with responsibility of anchoring this show while both students and staff including non members of the University community are regular listeners of this highly educative programme”.

Through you I also congratulate, the Director, Corporate Affairs, UNILORIN, Alhaji Kunle Akogun, the Station Manager UNILORIN 89.3 FM, Alhaji Idris Ibrahim Alooma and his team as well as the entire staff and students of the University of Ilorin on this great occasion” he remarked.

Other awardees on the occasion included the founder of the radio station, Professor Is’haq Oloyede; the DG National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) Mallam Is’haq Moddibo Kawu; DG National Library of Nigeria, Professor Lenrie Aina; the Ooni of Ife Oba Babatunde Ogunwusi Enitan; Alhaji Laola Shalasi; immediate past Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali; and some eminent Nigerians.
