Workers of Kwara State Water Corporation have suspended their six weeks old strike action in honour of the State Governor, Alhaji Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq.
The aggrieved workers under the banner of
Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) and Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations (AUPCTRE) of the state water corporation unit embarked on the industrial action on April 17, 2019 over non-remittance of deductions from their monthly salaries to Cooperative Unions and Federal Mortgage Bank for National Housing Fund.
They alleged that a deduction of N37.8million for cooperative unions and outstanding National Housing Fund deduction amounting to N5.6million for a period of 55months (between June 2013 and December 2017) were not remitted to the appropriate quarters.
The angry staff also accused the management of the state water corporation of stagnating the aggrieved staff for nine months without promotion.
But in a joint statement last night, the Chairman, Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN), Engr. Comrade Ahmed Kazeem and Chairman, Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations (AUPCTRE), Kwara State Water Corporation Unit, Comrade Funmi Olanrewaju, said the two unions suspended the strike in appreciation of Governor Abdulrazaq’s visit to some state water works within the Ilorin metropolis.
The union leaders noted that the Governor’s visit to the water facilities had restored the hope of workers that the state government under him was ready for a turn around in the water sector.
They, however, appealed to Governor Abdulrazaq to look into the plights of staff of the state water corporation ranging from promotion financial benefits from January to date, outstanding N37.8million cooperative deductions of the unions, N1.8million outstanding salary increment arrears and outstanding annual leave bonus of N4.5million among others.
It would be recalled that the Governor had toured three water works including Agba-Dam, Asa-Dam and Western Reservoir all within the Ilorin metropolis in the bid to ascertain the problem responsible for non-availability of drinkable water for residents.
