Labour Party Governorship candidate in Kwara State come 2019 general elections, Comrade Issa Aremu mni has lauded the brilliant initiative of the management of the University of Ilorin over the establishment of the Center for Ilorin Studies which is principally designed for keeping and preserving historical records.
Comrade Aremu also pledged to promote cultural heritage and historical artifacts of kwara state if elected as the state Governor in 2019.
Comrade Aremu who is also the Vice President of Geneva based IndustriALL Global Union, promised to use his connection and exposure to connect Center for Ilorin Studies with similar international agencies like UNESCO and other relevant foreign agencies so as to make it a cynosure of eyes and world class historical records center.
The Labour Party gubernatorial candidate made the promise during the week when he paid a visit to the Center, at the University of Ilorin.
Comrade Aremu who was excited with the quality and quantity of historical materials available at the center, also called on governments at all levels to attach utmost priority to the nation’s history in order to have a better understanding of where we were coming from, where we are at the moment and where we are heading to.
He said we can’t deepen knowledge as a people if we don’t keep historical records as the University of Ilorin is doing, saying that record keeping affords people ample opportunity to ascertain how virtually everything evolved.
Aremu therefore pledged his readiness to support the center in cash and kind to enable the university of Ilorin achieve the purpose for which the idea of the center was conceptualized.
In his remark, the Director of the Center for Ilorin Studies, Dr Ibrahim Jawondo said the center was established by the authority of the University of Ilorin to promote learning and document culture, both materials and immaterial.
Jawondo disclosed that the center had organised four conferences and published three journals, while the fourth one is in pipeline, pointing out that the center prides itself with other developmental programmes which is making it to be waxing stronger in terms of documenting valuable artifacts especially the material culture.
Director observed that what we are doing today is a product of yesterday while our tomorrow will be determined by what we are doing currently.
He commended Comrade Aremu for finding time to visit the center and expressed optimism that the center will be greater by the time the labour leader fulfils all his promises for the center.
Comrade Aremu was earlier taking round the various materials available in the center by the Director of the Center and supported by the staff of the center.
