Saturday 17th May 2025, young girls within Oro Kingdom were treated to a counseling programme on how they could escape sexual hazards and harassment that may come their ways as they pursue their careers in life.
The programme was organized by The Miners Interface (TMI), a Counseling Organization, in collaboration with Okerimi Oro National Executive Committee (ONEC) through her Education and Vocation Committee (EVC).
TMI, during the counseling session, uses Pictogram Device, which enables the young minds to have good grasp of the presentation.
The Guest Speaker at the program was Dr. Mrs. Omowumi Oloyede, Proprietor of New Dawn Model Schools, Agbeola Oro and CEO of Omoboloye Rentals.
After giving the breakdown of the types of sexual hazards inherent in the society, she gave valuable, practical tips on how young girls could escape their occurrence by taking precautionary measures while they interact with both male and female colleagues and others in the society.
Some of the steps she charged them to take in order to prevent sex hazards include opening up to their parents whenever they encounter sexual harassment or experiences close to it, guide against the assumption that they are ripe enough for marriage.
She advised them to be courteous, respectful, show understanding and be assertive in respect of what they want and what they do not want from their colleagues. She said, sex can take away destiny and opportunities, when experienced at the wrong time, giving instances of how some young girls, back in her school then, lost opportunity of university education because of teenage pregnancy.
The guest speaker, a retired award-winning principal, emphasized on giving special attention to young girls by their parents while they are growing up, enjoining parents and guardians not to relent because their efforts today will yield their praises tomorrow.
“In an attempt to punish a young girl, don’t send her out into the street or kick against giving her food; they are highly vulnerable, such punitive measures would make her more susceptible and prone to becoming a victim of sexual hazards,” she advised parents.
The Chairperson of the community’s Education and Vocation Committee, Chief Mrs. Victoria Kehinde Afolayan, expressed delight over the success recorded during the programme, even as she counselled girls to be focused on learning, pursue purpose-driven lives and aim higher in making their lives have greater impact in the society.
She made them realize nothing can stop them from achieving their dreams if they work hard and pray, enjoining them to listen positively to their parents, elders and teachers, and that when in doubt they should visit counselling officer.
She therefore commended the Counseling Organization and her own team. “The success recorded was as a result of our collective efforts. I am more than grateful for your understanding and cooperation,” she remarked.
Mr. Francis Olaoye, EVC member, described the event as a wonderful, impactful, beneficial career talk, and then prayed God to bless and strengthen the sponsors and organizers, adding that “it would enable the young minds grow to become exceptional leaders and industrious professionals.”
Participants (Girls-Child) were drawn from various primary and secondary schools (private and public) with Oro Kingdom.
Among the dignitaries present at the counseling programme were the National Chairman, Okerimi Oro National Executive Committee (ONEC), Aremo Afolayan James Adeola; Mr. Peter Adebara Alabi, a retired NYSC top officials; Col. Felix Abayomi Adeoye (rtd), who is Chairman, Governing Board of St. Peter’s Catholic Nursery and Primary School, Okerimi Oro, traditional and honourary Chiefs among others.
