The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern ultimatum to the federal government, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of its president, Comrade Joe Ajaero, before 12 midnight today.
The labour union also called for the reversal of the recent hike in petrol price to N617/Litre.
In a statement, the NLC placed all its affiliates, state councils, civil society allies, and the Nigerian populace on red alert, warning of imminent industrial action if its demands are not met.
The union has summoned an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council (NEC) for 9:00 AM tomorrow, September 10, 2024, to discuss further action.
The NLC’s demands come amidst growing public outcry over the petrol price hike and Ajaero’s detention, which the union describes as “unjust and provocative.”
The federal government has yet to respond to the NLC’s ultimatum, but the labour union’s move is seen as a significant escalation of tensions between organized labour and the government.
