Medical practitioners in Nigeria have been charged to embrace compassion health care while discharging their services, just as lack of show of compassion on the part of health workers has been identified as one of the factots responsible for avoidable death of many patients in the hospitals.
The President, Islamic Medical Association of Nigerian, Prof Ibrahim Oreagba, gave the charge during his lecture at this year association’s Seminar/ National Working committee meeting held in Ilorin, the kwara state capital.
Oreagba stated that lack of compassion and bad conduct of some healthcare professionals have been linked to avoidable death of scores of patients in the hospital,.
Speakiing on the theme of the seminar, ‘Compansionates healthcare: Integrating Islam Values, Oreagba urged healthcare professionals to be very considerate and compassionate about their patients to save lots of lives.

“Non compassion on the part of medical personnel oftentimes leads to prolonged stay of the patients in the medical facility. If compassion is not there the consequences on the patient are grave. The patient can even pack off.
“Doctors should understand the feelings of their patients. How the patient feel matters a lot. Islam has provided that compassion is key. We must focus on the patient apart from the normal complaints.
“The way doctors and other healthcare professionals relate with their patients will reveal other problems the patients have for doctors to care for those problems. You must focus on the patient and provide the necessary skills and quality service that will make the patient recover speedily.”
The Professor of Pharmacology and toxicology at the University of Lagos added that the seminar was aimed at enlightening the public on the need for compassion “when it comes to Islamic-based healthcare practice.
“People sometimes carry out their work in the hospital without being compassionate, without really taking the interest of the patient at heart.”
He therefore, recommended that healthcare professionals should know the feelings of their patients to bring out other problems they have.
