The  Southern Youth Assembly of Nigeria (SYAN) home and abroad under the leadership of Speaker. Rt. Hon.  Jonathan Olusegun Adekunle has wished Nigerians a Happy Democracy Day, as June 12 becomes the official Democracy Day in Nigeria.

The SYAN in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Adewoyun A. Tijani and made available to Journalists, congratulated Nigerian on this auspicious occasion.

“27 years after the June 12 1993 presidential election won by Chief MKO Abiola of the Social Democratic Party  was annulled by the military regime which led to a national uproar, the agitations of many civil and political activists to have June 12 Elections recognized has finally become a reality. The political history of Nigeria cannot be written without reference to the June 12, 1993 Elections.

“Today’s event is not about celebrating the June 12, 1993 alone, it is an event that calls for Peace and Unity and for national retrospection. The political class should be reminded that Democracy is about the people and their welfare. Those in power should shun greed and nepotism, corruption and other vices that makes life hard for Nigerians.

“21 Years after uninterrupted democratic dispensation, Nigeria as a country still has many areas to improve on. The ordinary Nigerians are not in a celebratory mood because Unemployment is at its peak, activities of Armed robbers, Bandits, Kidnappers, are not left behind. Our Educational Sector should also be seriously looked into as the quality of education in the country has reduced over the years” the statement added.

While commending  the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari of his productive efforts so far on the nation, SYAN urged the President and all concerned authorities to use the occasion productively to reflect on the challenges facing the country for democracy to have a real meaning in Nigeria.

The statement added that Nigerians must be able to enjoy the dividends of democracy, saying that good governance plays a pivotal role in making life more bearable for all and sundry.
