Nigerian students have been advised to be meticulous in choosing career and look for a field where they have comparative strength so as to excell and brake even in their chosen fields and become great contributors to the country’s growth and development.
The advice came to the fore at the 5th MMGIVIT Charity Initiative week 2020 titled ‘Education and Counselling Day 2020’held at Mustapha Akanbi Africa Peoples Hall, Onikanga Street, G. R. A Ilorin, the kwara state Capital.
Among the selected resource persons included Dr Usman Akanbi of Department of Agriculture Economics; Dr. Kayode Sakariyah Adewole, Department of Computer Science, University of Ilorin; Architect Bolaji Oladimeji; Dr Oba La’aro of Department of Communications, University of Ilorin, Professor Baba Alafara of Department of Industrial Chemistry, University of Ilorin; Professor Yahaya Oluwole Imam of Department of Religion, University of Ilorin; Professor Ibrahim Yusuf Arowosaye of Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin among others.
In their separate career talks, various scholars drawn from Law, Agriculture, Engineering, Architecture, Mass Communication, Computer Sciences and several others, the resource persons advised the participants who are secondary school students to look for area of interest to be studied in higher Institution.
In his message, the Chairman of the occasion, Professor Jeleel Ojuade of the Department of Performing Arts, University of Ilorin described the event as very helpful and supportive to participated students.
He explained that the various career talks which spanned through various fields would go a long way in helping the students to take a right decision as far as choice is concerned.
Professor Ojuade congratulated the participants for being lucky to have been counselled by qualified and highly knowledgeable teachers drawn across various disciplines.
In his comment, the convener of MMGIVIT CHARITY INITIATIVE, Professor Muhammed Mustapha Akanbi of the Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin said the initiave started in 2016 and was designed to give out items to the less privileged in the society.
Professor Akanbi said over time the organization moved beyond that and added some lofty programmes such as poetry competition, free health care and career talks callee education and Counselling Day for final year secondary school students.
He said the idea is to shape their future by giving them right advice and necessary information about the courses of their interests.
Professor Akanbi said 20 secondary schools across the states were selected and each presented 10 student representatives each led by their teachers.
“Honestly, Allah has been very kind to us, we have been impacted positively on people through this initiave. We have been able to contribute our own little quotas to better the lot of people, the large number of participants and crop of resource persons that are here today are a clear testimony to our efforts” he said .
He lamented that public schools have not really showed interest and called on heads of public schools in the state to see the initiave as a private scetor driven that is designed to help students shape their lives, adding that the counselling is free and beneficial.
He said the programme is being sponsored by kind-hearted Nigerians who believe in what the initiave is doing for the humanity.
Among the participated schools are Government Day Secondary School Gaa Akanbi Ilorin; Eucharistic Heart of Jesus Model College; Nana Aishat Academy, Akerebiata, Ilorin; Sheikh Abdulkadir College, Ilorin; Olumawu Groups of Ilorin; Bishop Smith Memorial College, Ilorin; Notredame Girls Academy, Amayo among others.
Later in the day, it slso held an interactive session with various Community Development Associations in the state on “Raising Awareness on Mental Health” held at the Africa Hall between 4pm and 6pm, on Thursday at the same venue, the charity initiative also organised Charity Poetry Competition while the programme will be rounded up on Saturday 25th of January 2020 with Distribution of Wealth and Health Awareness at Queen Hall premises, Unity road Ilorin.
