An Associate Professor of Accounting and Finance in the Kwara State University,  Malete, Mubaraq Sanni has called on Federal Government to collaborate with state governments and various civil society organisations to collectively address the imminent security challenges in the country.

Dr Sanni made the call on Friday (May 14, 2021) in his lecture at the annual get-together of the youth movement,  Oke Suna, Ojagbooro in Ilorin, the kwara state capital, held at Oke Suna Primary School, Ilorin.

Dr Mubaraq Sanni, who spoke on the topic THE CHALLENGES OF INSECURITY AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN NIGERIA: THE WAY FORWARD, also identified effective entrepreneurship among Nigerian youth  and improved country’s security architecture as potent tools to ward off the menace of insecurity in Nigeria.

“The menace of insecurity cannot be overemphasized. When a nation is saddled with the problem of insecurity, every other plans are stalled as it is being currently experienced in our country. Nigeria as a country, with a population of almost two Hundred million people, cannot allow insecurity to derail her political and economic development plans”

“The country’s young democracy is being threatened. Recently, we have experienced increase in violent activities in Nigeria, which had claimed several lives and properties. There is therefore urgent need to tackle it before it makes the country inhabitable as it is being experienced in many crisis-ridden countries of the world” he added.

Dr Sanni mentioned collaboration with neighbouring countries, improved border security, improved law enforcement, strategic investments in human and infrastructural development  as well as collaboration  with established religious and traditional institutions as some of measures that  will build community resilience against terrorism.

He also called on kwara state Governor, Mallam  AbdulRahman  AbdulRazaq to set a pace by introducing cattle ranch to permanently resolve the incessant herders/farmers clashes, pointing  out that Kwara state can lead a good example in the creation of ranching as once proposed by the federal government.

He however commended the state goverment for its recent recruitment exercise, and advised the government to look into the possibility of promoting vocational skills that will provide overall solution to job insecurity in the state.

“The recent recruitment process by Kwara State government is commendable. However, to tackle job insecurity and reduce the unemployment rate, the government needs to create enabling environment through establishment of ultra-modern market that will thrive the entrepreneur development in the state and decongest the existing and filled-up capacity markets like Oja-ipata, Oja-oba, Oja-tuntun, among others”.

“Government should modernize the production process of the indigenous crafts in Ilorin emirates like Aso-oke, pot-making among others so that our youths can be engaged and refrain from partaking in criminal activities”  he added.

Dr Mubaraq Sanni, who affirmed that kwara state is a civil servant state, urged the state government to implement minimum wage for the state workers so that the income can be redistributed, wealth created and self-worth enhanced and ultimately fighting financial insecurity.

While speaking on why mos businesses are not thriving, Dr Sanni said prominent factor that kills entrepreneurship is the interest paid on loan taken from banks and called for establishement of more Islamic (interest-free) cooperatives so that people can have access to fund without having to pay interest on the loan obtained, pointingbout that this gesture will also receive blessing from Allah as the Almighty Allah prohibited interest (riba) in the glorious Quran.
