Kwara: Drug control C’ttee takes campaign to correctional center

The Kwara State  Drug Control Committee has taken  campaign against drug abuse to Borstal Training Institution, Ganmon, Ilorin, as parts of the committee’s frantic efforts to kick out drug abuse among the youth in the state.

The Chairperson of the committee, Pharmacist Barakat Olanrewaju, while addressing the students, enjoined the students to do away with drug and illicit substances so as to become useful members of the society in the nearest future.


Pharmacist Olanrewaju described abuse of drugs as an act that is very injurious to the chemical and physiological bodies of the users and warned the students strongly not to stretch their hands on what may cause their own distraction in life.


She charged the students of the school to see drug abuse as a stumbling block towards the attainment of their dreams in life.

According to her, drug abuse causes permanent damage to the users as it leads to memory lost, psychological problem and desctruction of major organs of body like liver, lungs, kidney among others.


Also speaking at the visit, a representative of the state Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Nike A. Ibrahim counselled the students to be attentive to their teachers and cultivate habit of constant reading for them to excel in their Studies.


In his comment, Mr Oluwi Friday of the State Command of the National Drug and Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) said great purnishment awaits those found with banned drugs.


According to him, there is 15 years imprisonmen for holding Cannabis Sativa, 5 years jailed term for smoking it while the person plants it will have 25 years imprisonment.


In his remarks, the President of Nigerian Association of Patent and Proprietary Medicine Dealers (NAPPMED), Alhaji Abdulwahab Ajibola said all his members have been warned to desist from selling ilegal drugs, saying that any member found wanting would be made to face the wrath of law.


Appreciating the visiting team, the Comtroller of the Borstal Training Institution, Mrs Abimbola Ogunyemi said the school is a Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS), established to serve as a correctional center to rehabilitate school age children that are under 18 years.


Mrs Ogunyemi who who spoke through Mrs Akaka Ruth Ibiyemi thanked the committee for taking time to sensetise the students of the school on danger inherent in drug abuse.
