EFCC recovers N100m cash, convicts 26 persons in kwara

The Ilorin Zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) says it has recovered over N100 million cash between February and September 2019 in Kwara State.

The commission said it has equally confiscated properties worth hundreds of millions of naira from politicians, and civil servants which include hotels, plaza, landed property among others in the state.

The head of Ilorin Zonal office, Mr Isyaku Sharu disclosed this on Wednesday (September 11, 2019) while featuring on the 26th edition of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kawara state Council’s Personality Guest held at the union Secretariat, Ilorin, the kwara state capital.

“We have done quite a lot in terms of recovery. We have made huge recovery for the state government. As at last week we have recovered over N100 million for the state government and everyday, we are bringing more cases” EFCC zonal head said.

He disclosed that the commission had also convicted not less than 26 people between February and September 2019 it began operations in Kwara state, saying that more people will be paraded by the commission very soon.

He said most of these people that perpetrate these evil acts are civil servants, saying that most of them are level 14 officers.

“You will be amazed to see the revelation very soon. The civil servants are the one helping the politicians, teaching them what to do. Controllers of Finance and Account of various departments are the people mostly perpetrating this evil.

“We have quite a number of them in courts and as the court resume, we assure you by the end of this month you will see a number of these confiscation and forefiture and these are civil servants not more than level 14 officers” he added.

Sharu said the Ilorin Zonal office of the EFCC was created by the acting Chairman of the EFCC, Mr Ibrahim Magu to do an absolute clean up of corrupt practices in Kwara, Kogi and Ekiti states.

“The mandate given to us was that ‘go and and do a clean up of two decades of bearfaced fraud on the people of the kwara, Kogi and Ekiti states. Here we are, it is a task that must be done and every stakeholder must come on board so that we can fight the scourge collectively” Sharu said.

Sharu explained that the zonal office was specifically created by the acting Chairman of the EFCC, Mr Magu who, he said directed him to come to Kwara to look into a long-standing persistent economic and financial crime issues in the state.

“When the federal government approved the operational expansion of the commission, the Ag. Chairman, Mr Ibrahim Magu, deemed it necessary to create an office in Kwara so that we can bring anti corruption agency closer to the door step of the people of Kwara to feel our impact” he added.
