Dr Gobir, frontline educationist dies

A renowned esucationist and a frontline advocate of child education in Nigeria, Dr Belawu Garba Gobir is dead.

Late Dr Gobir who earned her Ph.D at the age of 70, died on Friday (August 16, 2019), after a brief illnes.

She will be buried according to Islamic injunction at 65 Umaru Audi Road, GRA, Ilorin, the Kwara state Capital on Saturday 17th August at 4.00pm.

Fidau for her repose will be held at 10.00 am on Saturday 24th August at Sarkin Gobir Compound, Ilorin, Kwara State.

ABRIDGED PROFILE OF LATE Dr GOBIR

Dr. Belawu Garba Gobir was born in 1941 into the Olugbon family in Ilorin West, Kwara State. She started her elementary education in Pakata School in Ilorin. From there she was selected to go to Government Girls’ School, Kano.

She completed her Grade Three and Grade Two courses in 1959 and 1962 respectively. She married the late Ambassador Abubakar Garba Gobir in 1963.

Dr. Belawu Gobir taught in some of the best schools in Nigeria including Capital School, Kaduna; Air Force Primary School, Victoria Island; and Air Force Secondary School, Ikeja where she was Head of French. She was later appointed Vice Principal, Administration in 1991, she thereafter became Head of Inspection and Training in the Air Force Directorate of Education, Ikeja before she retired voluntarily in 1994.

Dr Belawu Gobir obtained a London University Certificate in 1969, B. A. Ed (Educational Administration / French, Second Class Upper), and M. Ed (Educational Administration) in 1987 and 1988 respectively. She graduated with a PhD in Educational Administration from the University of Lagos, Akoka at the age of 70.

Dr. Belawu Gobir was a member of various professional organizations such as Nigeria Association for Educational Administration and Planning (NAEAP); Commonwealth Council for Educational Administration and Management (CCEAM); and ERNWACA. She is also a life member of Association of Past Members of Saint Katharine’s College, Berridge House and the College of All Saints, London. She has contributed peer reviewed articles in educational journals and published books.

Dr. Belawu Gobir was an active Girl guide and rose to become a Deputy District Commissioner of Nigerian Girl’s Guide Association.

Dr. Belawu Gobir’s wish was to see every Nigerian child, whether in public or private school, receive the very best education. This topic was the subject of her doctoral thesis, and she was passionate about enhancing the quality of teaching in Nigerian public schools.
