Unilorin: No tobacco company on our campus- management

The authority of the University of Ilorin has strongly debunked a newspaper report that the students of the University protested against the cigarette factory in the institution community.

The report, according to a statement signed by the University’s Director of Coorporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun, and made available to newsmen in Nigeria, said the report was untrue, baseless and an attempt to drag the University of Ilorin’s name in the mud by the mischief makers.

“The attention of the management of the University of Ilorin has been drawn to a news item in last Friday edition of Leadership newspaper in which a youth group was reported to have protested against a certain cigarette factory located within our university community.

“For the avoidance of doubt, there is no tobacco company within the vicinity of the University of Ilorin and we are at a loss as to why our name was associated with that news story.

“Even though we strongly suspect a mix-up in the name of the University concerned, the handiwork of agents of mischief who are hell-bent on dragging the good name of the University of Ilorin in the mud could not be totally ruled out.

“Suffice it, however, to state that the Universty of Ilorin has nothing to do with the story under reference” the statement said.

The University therefore appealed to the public to disregard the report, saying that University of Ilorin has no iota of connection with the purported story.
