Read what GSS Ilorin alumni did for three students

The 1999 set of the Government Secondary School (GSS) Ilorin, Kwara State at the weekend presented Scholarships and Certificate of Excellence to selected three students of the college.

The beneficiaries include Ajibola Muiz ,Abdulmalik A. Shaaba and Akanbi Basit Ayomide all in Senior Secondary School class.

Presenting the certificates to the benefitting students, the leader of the 1999 set, Bello Abdullateef, explained that the gesture was to appreciate the various contributions the school has impacted their lives.

“We graduated from this school 18 years ago, we all appreciate the efforts of the school, particularly the teachers for providing us with quality education and good moral values. What we are doing today is to pay back to the school that produced us” he said.

Abdullateef stated that the essence of the scholarship was to further encourage the students of the school to attach seriousness to their education.

He mentioned that the scholarship will cover the payment of the students’ 2018 West African Examination Council(WAEC).

Abdulateef disclosed that there are other line up projects by the group to be carried out in the school to make teaching and learning more conducive to the teachers and the students.

Responding to the gesture, the Principal of the school, Alhaji Salman Zakariyau Apo thanked the 1999 set of the students for extending hands of love and support to the students of their Alma Mater.

The principal, while commending the old students for their contribution towards promoting academic excellence among Students, described old students as the school’s backbone.

He said, ” when the news of the scholarship got to us, we were all very happy and excited because we believed this singular act would go a long way in motivating the students and as well improving the academic standards of the school.”

Alhaji Zakariyau also said the scholarship programme would encourage the students of the school to be more serious and committed to their studies as well as motivate and spur the school management to be more proactive towards attaining academic excellence.

The Principal appealed to all the alumni of the school and other relevant stakeholders to come to the aid of the College in the areas of the renovation of some of the staff quarters, classrooms and provision of a functional library that would assist students in their studies.

“We equally appeal to the public to assist us on our roads, and also in the areas of sporting equipment and facilities that would assist our students to do more in the aspect of sports and other extracurricular activities “.

He added, “there is always need for private partnership in education if we want to achieve the desired goal for the sector as the government can’t do it alone “.

The Principal of the school, however, commended the state government for creating enabling environment and providing the necessary support in the education sector of the state.
